Who Are We?
LOTS provides parents with early literacy skills to ensure their children are ready for school. A middle class child is read to an average of 2000 hours prior to Kindergarten, whereas a child living in poverty is read to an average of 19 hours. Our seven-week evidence-based program helps close the school readiness gap. Local teachers lead sessions that include literacy activities for children and skill building for participating parents.
In addition to reading readiness, the curriculum also focuses on social-emotional development. Skill development in these two areas has been shown to play the greatest role in school success for young children. LOTS serves 140 North Shore children each summer. Sessions are held in Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Tofte, Grand Marais, Finland, and Grand Portage.
